The traditional 18 of Bonny Greens is all glistening emerald grass and cerulean blue skies, Balmy Dunes is a desert with plentiful sand traps to navigate, Bowser Highlands is a rocky challenge shot through with lava hazards.
It is splendid video game golf at heart, heightened by the usual Nintendo charm and finesse. There is plenty of opportunity to add draw and fade (even both in the same shot, swinging drives left then right around different obstacles), while the bend of the meter while lying on an incline or in a bunker is a neat visual indicator of how your shot will be affected. Hit the button once to start the swing, hit it again to set power. You can play using motion controls to swing, which is good fun, but I’d wager the majority of your time will be using the classic metered swing. Certainly, its fundamentals are finely executed. They wouldn’t stand for this at St Andrews, let me tell you.īut for all of its cartoonish charm and manic embellishments, Super Rush sits somewhat uncomfortably in a halfway house between madcap and meticulous. As well as mastering the fine art of the short game, Mario and co must contend with whirlwinds hoiking your shots up cliffs, flash floods and dusty dunes, opponents skimming shots off the ponds and Yoshi running you over on a giant egg. And so it is with Mario Golf: Super Rush. Although as the years have passed, Mario’s golfing holidays have been more on the manic side. So who could begrudge him a few relaxing rounds? Not me.
Golf has been one of our favourite plumber’s favourite pastimes for 35 years, even amongst the karting, football (oh, I do miss Mario Strikers) and various other activities the ubiquitous Italian chooses to partake in. It is always a pleasure to see Mario taking time out from throwing maniacal villain Bowser around to take the tetchy dinosaur out for a day on the links.
